Why do many Mexicans refuse to learn English?

They try to play both sides of the fence when it comes to the immigration issue. They claim that they are no different from the European immigrants that came here in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, yet unlike the European immigrants, they do not want to assimilate. The European immigrants learned English and became Americans. The Mexican immigrants, on the contrary do not learn English, and in turn have children that are taught Spanish at home. It makes me absolutely sick. Living in L.A. I see this all of the time. I’m not saying that they are bad people – many of them that I know are very nice – but this is highly irresponsible and detrimental to our country’s future.

  1. Instead of helping them we make it easy for them NOT to learn English. If you are on the phone, the caller is given a choice if he wants the menu to be in Spanish. There are Spanish signs everywhere. We have made it easy for them to get around learning English. I used to work in a factory and the foreman was injured because the worker didn’t speak English and threw the wrong switch. How hard can it be to learn a few important words of English? If they’re going to live in this country they should learn to speak its language. Worse, if they do speak English, they pretend they don’t speak it if they’re involved in an accident. I have to call that dishonest. My people were from Italy and the first thing we did was learn English. Because we were Americans.
